Program Overview

As a music education student, you will study music theory, composition, conducting, music history, and various forms of music from around the world. In addition to classroom learning, you will are required to maintain and enhance your own nstrumental skills by participating in an ensemble of your choice each semester. Another key part of the program is developing your own teaching strategies and practices to effectively educate K-12 students.

Students who desire licensure in another state must contact their state department of education for details about whether or not this coursework will meet state requirements.

For first-time freshmen and transfer students:

Scholarships

Concordia University offers talent-based music scholarships to incoming students of all majors. Students apply and submit supplemental materials in January and then complete auditions in February. All award recipients must participate in a music ensemble and take private lessons on the awarded instrument while enrolled at the university. Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod

With only 18 credits, you can earn a Lutheran Teacher Diploma (LTD) with your bachelor's in education. This add-on option will give you the opportunity to serve within the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS). You need to be a confirmed member of the LCMS to earn this Lutheran Teacher Diploma.

With your LTD, you will become eligible to receive Calls as Commissioned Ministers of the Gospel, as our program's six courses are tailored to provide the necessary theological training. These courses are taught in collaboration with Concordia's Theology department:

New Testament
Old Testament
Biblical Theology
Lutheran Confessions
Faith and Life Elective
Teaching the Faith

And our Forward in Faith scholarships from the School of Education are for eligible students looking to earn their Lutheran Teacher Diploma.
